Ask any coach or veteran sports writer and they'll tell you "home field advantage" is a real factor in sports success. They have witnessed many remarkable performances from teams who often exceed their expectations as they respond to the cheers and atmosphere of a stadium full of supporters.
"The so-called '12th man' effect has dynamic influence on play," says Junior Ward, former East High star who serves as chairman of the stadium foundation. "The excitement of a home crowd full of parents, teachers, schoolmates and neighborhood supporters spurs the team to play its hardest and best. We need to restore that for our Eagle teams."
Architectural and engineering assistance is being provided by Metro Nashville Public Schools staff and Barge Cauthen & Associates. One preliminary conceptual design (excerpted below) shows new grandstands on the east side of the current field with a field house underneath, press box on top, two concession stands and restrooms, and two ticket booths. On the west side are a ticket booth and visitor bleachers. Paved pathways connect the two sides on the north side.
Please note that the image above represents the initial design concept, so various elements may change due to site studies and budgetary considerations. The old concrete J. J. Keyes Stadium seated between 5,000 and 6,000 fans, according to conflicting history accounts on the EastAlums.com website.
Success of the Foundation's fund-raising drive will influence the size and type of amenities constructed. We will update drawings and budgeting as the process continues.
